Private storage is not automatically a backup, and self-hosting is not automatically end-to-end encryption. Your devices, recovery process, sharing links, administrators, backups, and encryption-key ownership determine what is protected—and from whom.
Three different kinds of control
Proton Drive
Best overall for personal privacyThe most straightforward privacy upgrade for individuals and small teams. Proton encrypts file contents, filenames, and folder names on your device, offers a usable free plan, and now includes encrypted Docs and Sheets alongside storage and sharing.
Choose it when
- You want end-to-end encryption without operating your own server.
- You want familiar web, desktop, and mobile access with a free starting point.
- You can accept a smaller productivity ecosystem in exchange for stronger default privacy.

Sync.com
Best for secure team file sharingA practical choice when encrypted storage must still support client folders, file requests, team shares, permissions, recovery, and Microsoft Office workflows. It is less of an office suite than Google Drive, but stronger as a secure file layer.
Choose it when
- Your work revolves around sharing files with clients or a small team.
- You need end-to-end encryption plus admin controls, recovery, and detailed sharing options.
- Your users primarily work on Windows, macOS, iOS, or Android.

Nextcloud
Best for self-hosting and data sovereigntyThe right answer when choosing the server, storage, jurisdiction, administrators, and office integration is the goal. Nextcloud is an open-source collaboration platform—not a turnkey zero-knowledge storage subscription.
Choose it when
- Your organization needs on-premises, private-cloud, or chosen-provider deployment.
- You have administrators who can own updates, backups, monitoring, identity, and recovery.
- You want files, sharing, collaborative office tools, chat, calendar, and integrations under your control.

- Self-hosting is not automatically end-to-end encrypted; server-side and end-to-end modes protect against different threats and require deliberate configuration.

A safer Google Drive migration
- 01
Inventory files and Google-native documents.
Count ordinary files separately from Docs, Sheets, Slides, Forms, shared drives, shortcuts, and files owned by someone else. Native formats and ownership create most migration risk.

Record sharing and ownership.
Export or document important collaborators, public links, group permissions, and external owners. File exports do not recreate Google permissions.

Test one representative folder.
Include large files, nested folders, shared items, and complex documents. Open converted Docs, Sheets, and Slides in the destination before committing.

Transfer, count, and compare.
Compare folder and file counts, sizes, timestamps, and several important documents. Keep the original Takeout archives offline as a separate recovery copy.

Run both systems before deleting.
Recreate critical shares, switch desktop sync, update links, and wait through a full backup cycle. Remove Google data only after users confirm the new workflow.
When you should stay with Google Drive
Live document collaboration is the job.
If your team depends on complex Sheets, Slides, comments, Forms, Apps Script, and frictionless simultaneous editing, storage alone cannot replace Workspace.
Everyone you work with already uses it.
External sharing, account familiarity, and Google's broad integration ecosystem can outweigh a privacy improvement that creates constant workflow friction.
No one can own the replacement.
Nextcloud without capable administration—or encrypted storage without a tested recovery process—can create more operational risk than a well-governed Drive account.

We have not yet completed a large, same-dataset migration and long-term sync test across all four platforms. The ordering is an editorial fit assessment under our published methodology, not a throughput benchmark or security audit.
